Why sometimes GPS loggers / GPS receivers have less battery run time?

GPS has longer battery runtime under optimum environment. For those non optimum environments, (For example. when keep trying a position fix, seeking Bluetooth Connection, or under an unstable environment – bad weather, forest, buildings.) GPS would need more calculation and power consumption. So that battery runtime is less than the one in optimum condition.
